The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the rules are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.
This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
