British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a joint strike targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, located using surveillance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was situated in mountains just to the north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft used Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a number of access tunnels leading to the facility... initial indications are that the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the attack conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - referred to as ISIS - imposed militant control over parts of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This operation demonstrates British leadership, and determination to work closely with our allies, to eradicate any resurgence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the minister said.

UK warplanes have carried out surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of IS after its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank every member of British forces who took part in this operation for their professionalism and their courage," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were part of numerous British troops on duty over the festive period. This action, to take out dangerous terrorists who endanger our safety, shows how UK forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, protecting the UK within its borders and influential overseas."

During December, the US military executed what it termed a "major assault" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an ambush killed two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates Islamic State still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
