Just as the recent storm swept through the northern region the previous evening, the home side swept United aside at the their home ground. It was a statement three goal victory for the City coach's side owing to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a display that truly announced their championship potential as they consolidated their standing at the top of the table.

Consecutive Setbacks for United

This outcome signalled consecutive league defeats for Marc Skinner’s side for the maiden instance since May 2024, leaving them a significant margin off the table toppers with their title hopes severely dented.

The Red Devils' capacity to juggle domestic and European soccer with a thin roster has been a widely debated issue since they qualified for the Champions League. Looking at the calendar, it always seemed this was the period that would truly test this ability. Sadly for the opposition, they looked fatigued all game, the landmark win against Paris Saint-Germain clearly having left its mark.

Tactical Shifts

Marc Skinner had attempted to freshen things up with a a few adjustments. Ella Toone, Elisabeth Terland, Janssen and Leah Galton all provided energy, although the omission of the in-form Malard to the sidelines caused surprise.

City, in contrast, have no similar fitness concerns. Andrée Jeglertz made one adjustment from last week’s win over the Toffees with Hemp making her initial starting appearance since recovering from injury.

Overpowering Start

The home side, meanwhile, could have increased their lead when a delightful Miedema through ball sent Bunny Shaw away only for her to fail to convert but it mattered little to the winning team. Having failed to defeat any team who placed above them the previous campaign, Jeglertz’s side now have successes against Arsenal and United to put them in a commanding situation after nine games.
