Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay systems.
Replay systems are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Athletes are granted the option to contest specific decisions from the official, echoing the system currently in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.
This step follows just a season following the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old tradition of line judges.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to re-examine other situations, such as:
- Whether a ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
- Potential interference end of a point.
Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a competitor can ask for.
Practical Application
A recent incident took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.
The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."
The umpire viewed a replay and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
This technology are not new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.
Other Changes
Another change at Wimbledon this year involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.
In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
